What does a school mascot represent? Community. The perfect embodiment of both school spirit and culture is a school mascot. Although they are known for hyping up the crowd at sporting events, mascots also play a crucial role in student life through their enthusiasm for the school and their endless positivity.
At Boston Latin, we are so lucky to have our mascot, Wolfie, show up to football games at both Harvard Stadium and Clemente Field, the annual Thanksgiving game pep rally and various other school events. Olivia Pappas (I) says that Wolfie “brings spirit to the school and the people who play him are very interactive with the crowd.” Students appreciate Wolfie’s hard work in making each sports event a memorable experience for both the crowd and athletes.
The Thanksgiving pep rally is a prime display of school spirit and an event that Wolfie has been attending for years. Alum Janelle Austin (neé Costa) (‘96) views the pep rally as a core memory in which the school mascot was always featured.
Wolfie excites both the crowd and the team through their enthusiasm and cheerleading. The mascot represents the student body and energizes the crowd at school events. Austin believes that any sporting event without Wolfie was subdued in comparison to the events with the mascot.
Wolfie additionally improves the outcome of sports games. The excitement of the crowd is often dependent on the presence of Wolfie — it is never turned down by the student athletes and motivates them to play well.
Known for his school spirit, Trevor O’Brien (I) remembers enjoying when the Blue Man Group wrapped Wolfie in toilet paper at Senior Night this year. O’Brien adds, “Wolfie and I are two peas in a Latin school pod. We love taking long walks on the field, posing for pictures and of course sharing our BLS spirit with everyone!”
Many students have had similarly positive experiences with Wolfie and will remember them for years to come. Pappas, for example, spoke fondly about making a TikTok with the mascot at one of the football games last fall.
Austin says that Wolfie “was a recognizable symbol of the pack […] at events or community events. […] It was definitely something that people would understand as more of a school spirit symbol.” The wolf mascot is a representation of our school’s athleticism and good sportsmanship.
O’Brien believes that Wolfie is intertwined with our school’s history due to its connection with Romulus and Remus. Until its change in 2019, the School’s logo was formerly Lupa along with the two boys Romulus and Remus was a representation of Boston Latin ’s connection to Roman mythology and our education in the classics.
O’Brien also notes that “the wolf reflects the high work environment of Boston Latin School and shows the student’s commitment to rise to any challenge that presents itself.” The wolf mascot is the perfect representation of our School’s history and current curriculum.
Wolfie is a large part of our school pride, and we are proud to have him represent our athletics at BLS. O’Brien hopes for Wolfie to become a part of non-sporting events as well, such as Senior Kickoff or Asian Night to hype up the crowd.
