Wolfpack track captain Max Deane (I) has committed to Boston College (BC) and is looking forward to participating in his sport at the highest level. Deane, who currently holds the school record in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, is set to run in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I and no one is more excited for him than his fellow teammates.
Deane started his track career as a freshman at Boston Latin School and became a dual-sport athlete, competing in both track and hockey. In his senior year, he made the decision to quit hockey and put all of his focus into track, allowing him to compete in the winter season for the first time.
After a somewhat unusual recruitment process, Deane announced his commitment to BC in April, where he will continue his track career at the collegiate level. He remarks that BC had always sparked his interest regardless of whether he would run there or not. “When they recruited me, it just worked out,” he says.
For the past four years, Deane has excelled on the track. Each year, he shaves seconds off of his own personal bests, continuously topping himself in the record book. Coach Christian Blondin praises Deane’s dedication to the sport, proudly referring to Deane as the most determined athlete he has ever worked with.
“He is somebody that other people should look up to. He puts the work in and shows up every day,” Coach Blondin explains. “All of the qualities I look for in the team, he exhibits.”
As captain, Deane demonstrates his devotion to the team by putting his best effort into every practice and meet. Deane’s teammate and co-captain Rebecca Hein (I) adds that Max looks after the younger athletes on the team: “He is always generous and drives the younger kids to practice. They definitely look up to him as a mentor because he is such a model athlete and captain.”
Not only is Deane a phenomenal athlete, he also proves to have good character, which is commended by those around him. Coach Sean Nyhan states, “What I admire about Max is that he is a great athlete, but an even better person.”
Deane credits his drive to personal motivation. He explains, “I wanted to become the best athlete I could be and a better version of myself.” This outlook has led Deane to excel in high school and ultimately set him up for success in his future at BC.
At BC, Deane hopes to continue improving and pushing himself as an athlete and to keep up his record-breaking streak by topping school records. Deane has rightfully impressed everyone by demonstrating both immense talent and a great mentality. It will be exciting to see him excel at the next level, bearing the full support of BLS.
